SuperTag release 4/2012: SiteCatalyst & DoubleClick enhancements plus conversion de-duplication

Although we should have taken a break after finally launching the new improved user interface last week we got stuck right back into it! Check out the new features and enhancements we released this week as well as the respective screen shots below.
  • Enhancement: Generic bug fixes (yep, those little buggers just creep in no matter what we do so let us know if you find one :)
  • Enhancement: Completely configure and customise all Adobe SiteCatalyst settings including custom props, eVars and events based on custom business rules and any available page element (i.e. URL parameters, cookies, JavaScript variables, DOM elements)
  • Enhancement: Implement and customise all types of DoubleClick tags including counter and sales activity tags to implement display re-targeting and conversion tracking without copying and pasting any JavaScript
  • New feature: Selectively trigger affiliate (and any other conversion) tags based on the first or last campaign touch point (frist or last click) to de-duplicate conversion and avoid double paying your advertising partners in CPA deals
Have a look at your account to experiment with the new features yourself and let us know if you have any questions or comments or contact us for a demo.

SuperTag tag management platform: New user interface with improved usability and performance

Have you seen our SuperTag tag management platform yet? If not, check out the below screen shots. We think it looks much better now with the brand new re-designed user interface (based on the Twitter Bootstrap framework).

Apart from improving overall usability and design, the whole front-end was actually re-vamped which you can't actually see but lead to a significantly improvement in performance - the app is really snappy now. Contact us for a demo if you think your company could benefit from a container tag!

New YouTube Analytics interface and features: Check out our AFL Grand Final data viz video stats

YouTube just announced the next generation of their video analytics feature which uses the same data as the old Insights tool. To be honest, not much has changed apart from an interface design upgrade but it's nice to see that this has become a focus again and we can only hope this will get included into Google Analytics at some stage.

Check out the video stats from our recent AFL Grand Final Twitter data visualisation to get an overview of what's on offer in the new youtube.com/analytics tool. As you can see we're certainly not a video production house and don't get millions of views but the AFL video was a nice spike for us - never had more than a hundred views before!

The data shows us that the majority of views originated in Australia and came mostly from males between 25-54 (surprise surprise). Interesting to see is that mobile was much bigger than anticipated with almost 25% of views. I really love the video retention reports though, they're are awesome to optimise your actual video content (and I hope more companies will start using this to improve their TV ads). In the case of our AFL video you can see that we have a fairly steady drop-off of total viewers during the video but compared to the average (which is great benchmarking data) are actually doing pretty well in getting viewers to watch the video to the very end.

Read the YouTube analytics guide for a more detailed explanation of the various reports.

Latest news on Tableau 7.0 from the 2011 Tableau data visualisation conference in Las Vegas

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.

– Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Unlike Raoul, there hasn't been much winning on the tables of Vegas so far but, no doubt, my luck's gonna change soon! Where's that ATM again ...

So anyway, the 2011 Tableau customer conference is coming to an end at the Encore Casino, Las Vegas and your faithful Datalicious correspondent has been there to see it all (and I mean ALL of it).

For Tableau, it has been a chance to showcase their new releases of Desktop and Server (both due in January). More on that below. For customers, it has been a great opportunity to meet the 300 strong team (all that was left back in Seattle was an answering machine), and learn about features (old and new) that we can use to pimp our vizzes.

Tableau 7.0

I’m not going to list everything they’ve changed since 6.1 because there's stacks but here are the best bits:

  • Tableau Server will have a separate repository for datasets that can be automatically refreshed. Essentially, this means that the ‘keepers of the data’ can easily build and share ‘nice’ datasets with the people who need to build the reports and do the analyses. No drivers or database passwords required. It’s another big step to putting more data into the hands of the people who want answers to their business questions.
  • A “replace with new dataset” function. This is my favourite because quite often we build and develop dashboards in prototype form based on some sample Excel data, only to have to rebuild the dashboard once the data warehouse is built and Tableau is connected live. With this new feature, all we’ll need to do is switch in the database for the Excel at the click of a button and bam!
  • And for all you Excel perverts out there, area charts now come standard. Still no guages though ;)
We’ve got our hands on the beta version of 7.0 and look forward to demonstrating the new features with some vizzes over the coming weeks.

Also big thanks to Dirk and Ross, two Tableau Doctors who sorted out some really nasty Tableau table calculations that’ll help us build an interactive media attribution engine.

Adios amigos

Google Analytics keeps innovating, introduces new Flow Visualizations and Real-Time analytics

Google has added an exciting new feature to its Analytics tool to help you visualize how different classes of visitor move around your site. There have been a few attempts at this kind of visualization, none of which have been particularly useful. We think this one hits the mark rather well.

Flow_visualizations
Starting on the left you see where visitors have come from, which is the default but you can start from other segments, then the landing pages and subsequent pages. The Datalicious site is pretty simple, so there's not much, but what we see in our clients' sites is much more interesting, with the full complexity of connections laid out in a really interesting way. This new feature will be gradually rolled out to all Google Analytics users over the next few weeks.

It comes hot on the heels of Google's Real Time view, which is also being gradually rolled out and gives a brilliant live dashboard of who is on your site right now. Google are clearly taking the analytics space very seriously, with lots of very cool stuff in the pipeline that we can't talk about yet!
